Iranian Attack Strikes Kuwait Airport

Terminal 1 Hit, Flights Suspended

An Iranian drone and missile attack struck Kuwait's international airport early on Wednesday, causing injuries and forcing authorities to divert flights, according to Kuwait's state news agency. The attack caused "severe damage" to the airport's T1 building, the General Civil Aviation Authority confirmed. The assault targeted Terminal 1, causing serious physical damage to key infrastructure including check-in counters and boarding areas. Technical teams began assessing structural integrity, while authorities cordoned off surrounding zones to prevent further risk to travellers and airport personnel.

Several people were injured and taken to hospital, though the severity of their conditions has not been disclosed. Kuwait Airways suspended operations until further notice. Kuwaiti civil aviation authorities closed the country's airspace to all commercial traffic, with incoming flights diverted to alternative airports including hubs in Doha, Riyadh, and Dubai.

Wider Regional Escalation

Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting Bahrain, Kuwait, and civilian shipping in the Gulf in the early hours of Wednesday. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the retaliatory strikes "should serve as a lesson" for the United States. The General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces blamed what it described as "criminal Iranian aggression", saying the drones were part of a coordinated hostile operation.

The conflict traces back to late February 2026, when President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran, followed by joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on military and infrastructure sites. A two-week ceasefire was declared in April, but initial talks in Pakistan failed to produce a peace deal, and Trump later announced an open-ended extension of the ceasefire alongside a continued U.S. blockade.

U.S. forces conducted strikes on Qeshm Island in response to the attempted attacks by Iran, and defeated multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. An additional wave of Iranian drones attempting to attack U.S. forces in Kuwait failed to impact intended targets. U.S. Central Command air defences successfully downed multiple drones and ensured no American personnel or assets were harmed.
