President Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump)marked his 80th birthday on Sunday, June 14, by staging a UFC (@ufc) fight night on the White House South Lawn, an invite-only mixed martial arts event billed as UFC Freedom 250. The event drew about 4,300 guests, seven stoppages and sharp criticism over the use of the historic grounds. Two days later, the FBI said it had broken up a plot to attack it.

The fights took place inside a custom steel-arch structure nicknamed The Claw, which housed a standard octagon cage. Fighters walked out from the Oval Office area, and Trump and UFC chief Dana White (@danawhite) appeared together on the Blue Room Balcony for the national anthem. Military jets flew overhead, the crowd chanted "USA" and the night leaned hard into patriotic pageantry.  About 1,200 of the guests were active-duty service members, and thousands more watched on screens at the nearby Ellipse.

The party landed on a day Trump was already claiming a bigger win. Hours earlier he announced an initial agreement to end the war with Iran, with Tehran confirming the deal and mediator Pakistan saying it would be signed on Friday in Switzerland. Trump ordered the US naval blockade lifted and said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen toll-free on signing, a move expected to ease oil and gas flows to global markets. He flew out after the fights for the G7 summit in France.

The production was expensive. Fox News put the cost near $60 million, and White had said earlier that simply replacing the grass afterward would run about $700,000. Crypto.com and Ram sponsored the event, which streamed on Paramount+. Guests included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison.

Who won the fights?

All seven bouts ended inside the distance. The marquee results:

  • Justin Gaethje, a heavy underdog, stopped previously undefeated champion Ilia Topuria to take the undisputed lightweight title. Topuria's corner ended the fight after the fourth round, and Gaethje celebrated with a backflip off the cage.
  • Ciryl Gane beat Alex Pereira by second-round TKO to claim the interim heavyweight title.
  • Sean O'Malley defeated Aiemann Zahabi, and Bo Nickal knocked out Kyle Daukaus.
  • Diego Lopes opened the event with a win over Steve Garcia.
  • The seven-fight card also featured Mauricio Ruffy defeating Michael Chandler and Josh Hokit stopping Derrick Lewis.

Trump congratulated several winners and spoke with Gaethje after the main event. He later described the night to reporters as one of the best sporting events he had ever seen.

Why was the event controversial?

Critics argued that turning the White House lawn into a commercial fight venue was inappropriate, especially during the year of America's 250th anniversary. Two Virginia residents sued to stop the event, claiming UFC had been given improper access to public grounds for a private, for-profit show. A federal judge declined to block it on Friday after the Justice Department argued the suit came too late. Other complaints centered on the cost and the likely damage to the South Lawn from the structure and the crowd.

Supporters framed the night as patriotic spectacle, pointing to the military honors, the flyovers and an upset win by an American fighter. Trump and White have said the date was a coincidence rather than a birthday party. "It happens to be my birthday, but I didn't do it for that reason," Trump said. Dana White said the promotion would not do it again.

Did anyone try to attack the event?

On Tuesday, June 16, FBI Director Kash Patel (@FBIDirectorKash) said agents had disrupted a plot aimed at the event. In a post on X, he said the FBI and its partners became aware of a threat on June 10 involving individuals outside the National Capital Region, and that a multi-state operation put multiple suspects in custody, with "allegedly planned attacks" stopped. The Associated Press reported that five people were arrested across Ohio, Missouri and California, and the figure of 23 individuals coordinating through Signal chats was cited in reporting attached to Patel's post.

The FBI did not detail the alleged plan in Patel's statement. Fox News, cited by NBC News, reported that the group had discussed using explosive-laden drones to strike buildings near the venue, then targeting fleeing crowds with a sniper team and storming a White House gate. None of that has been confirmed in court, and charges were expected to be unsealed later in the week.

Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit, Trump said he had not been briefed on the plot. "The attack that I watched was the fighters," he added. Vice President JD Vance said he believed officials went public because the planned attack was large in scale. The event itself went ahead without incident.
