AI Makes Crypto More Important, Coinbase CEO Says...
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong argues that the AI boom does not threaten crypto. Instead, it makes crypto more important as the programmable financial infrastructure autonomous AI agents will depend on.
Armstrong Pushes Back on the 'Pivot to AI' Narrative
Coinbase CEO @brian_armstrong has a direct message for anyone telling crypto builders to abandon ship for artificial intelligence: that is zero-sum, scarcity thinking. In an X post on July 26, Armstrong publicly rejected the notion that AI and cryptocurrency are competing technology megatrends, arguing that framing the two fields as mutually exclusive stems from flawed thinking.
Armstrong believes crypto is a general-purpose technology that should be considered infrastructure, similar to electricity or the internet. It does not compete with the next big megatrend. It underpins it. A strong AI megatrend, in his view, does not detract from crypto but makes it more important.
Armstrong's comments come amid a recent wave of Bitcoin mining and other crypto companies accelerating their shift toward AI. That pivot narrative is precisely what he is pushing back against.
Why AI Agents Need Crypto
The core of Armstrong's argument rests on a practical problem. Central to his thesis is the fundamental mismatch between legacy banking and artificial intelligence. Autonomous AI agents cannot open traditional bank accounts, provide government identification, or wait several business days for wire transfers to settle across international borders.
As Armstrong put it: "AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure and will eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined." Instead, AI systems require real-time, micro-transactional, and fully programmable digital money that operates without human friction. That is crypto.
Structurally, AI agents lack direct access to global banking rails and are designed to operate 24/7. This structural mismatch is where crypto comes into play. Stablecoins offer AI agents access to programmable, always-on money.
Coinbase is already building for this reality. The company is constructing the infrastructure those AI agents will use. "We pioneered this with the x402 protocol, Base, and USDC, which now power the vast majority of all agentic payments," Armstrong noted. The x402 protocol has already processed over 100 million transactions in nine months on the Base network, with Amazon and Google among its adopters.
According to Armstrong, in the future AI agents will not only make payments. They will also independently perform numerous economic activities such as fund management, investment transactions, trading, financial advisory, and capital raising. Crypto, he argues, is the only infrastructure built to handle it.
