Digital Asset (@digitalasset), the New York company building the Canton Network (@CantonNetwork), has raised at least $812 million since its founding in 2014, per CryptoRank data. The latest addition came on July 21, when Shinhan Financial Group and SC Ventures, the venture arm of Standard Chartered, joined an already oversubscribed round.

Whatever the final tally, the trajectory is hard to miss. Some $550 million of that total has arrived in the past 13 months alone, and the cap table now reads like a directory of global finance: Goldman Sachs, HSBC, BNP Paribas, BNY Mellon, Nasdaq, and now two more banking heavyweights from Asia and the UK.

What Was the Latest Investment?

On July 21, Digital Asset announced that Shinhan and SC Ventures had joined the funding round it closed in June. The company did not disclose how much the two firms put in, but tracking platforms and subsequent reporting put the expansion at $10 million, lifting the round total from $355 million to $365 million.

The strategic logic is regional. Shinhan is South Korea's largest banking group and is expected to support institutional adoption discussions in Asia, building on Digital Asset's recent partnership with Hanwha. SC Ventures brings Standard Chartered's global network and its digital assets ecosystem. CEO Yuval Rooz (@YuvalRooz) said blockchain adoption in financial markets will be driven by institutions ready to move "beyond experimentation and into production."

How Big Was the June Round?

The core round closed on June 11 at $355 million, led by a16z crypto (@a16zcrypto) with a $100 million check. It valued Digital Asset at around $2 billion post-money and came in well above the roughly $300 million target Bloomberg reported in May.

The investor list ran past 20 names, including 7RIDGE, ABN Amro, Apollo Funds, Citadel Securities, CME Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, HSBC, Polychain, Hanwha Investment & Securities, SoFi, Tradeweb, and a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. FT Partners advised on the deal.

Rooz framed the raise as balance sheet expansion for an already profitable business, giving it room for acquisitions and ecosystem investments.

How Does the Total Break Down?

The disclosed rounds stack up as follows:

  • July 2026: $10 million round expansion (Shinhan Financial Group, SC Ventures)
  • June 2026: $355 million strategic round (a16z crypto lead, $2 billion valuation)
  • December 2025: $50 million (BNY Mellon, Nasdaq Ventures, S&P Global, iCapital)
  • June 2025: $135 million Series E (co-led by DRW Venture Capital and Tradeweb)
  • April 2021: $120 million Series D (7RIDGE and Eldridge)
  • December 2019: $35 million Series C (Accenture, Citi Ventures, DTCC, Deutsche Börse, and others)
  • October 2017: $40 million Series B (Blackstone)
  • 2016: $67.2 million across two rounds, including $60 million led by Goldman Sachs

That adds up to $812.2 million in disclosed capital, and the true total is likely somewhat higher. An extended Series C in 2020 from Samsung Venture Investment and Salesforce Ventures and a 2022 strategic round led by SBI Investment never came with public numbers attached.

Why Are Banks Writing the Checks?

The money is aimed squarely at scaling Canton, Digital Asset's privacy-enabled Layer-1 built for regulated capital markets. The pitch is that institutions can bring assets, settlement, and collateral workflows onchain without exposing sensitive transaction data to every participant, the core objection banks have long held against public chains.

That pitch appears to be landing, as the company says the network has supported around $6 trillion in tokenized asset issuance, JPMorgan and DTCC are among its users, and Visa joined as a Super Validator in March. Many of the June investors are also prospective users of Canton, which is exactly the flywheel Digital Asset has spent a decade trying to build.

The equity structure matters as the token side heats up. Investors bought shares in Digital Asset, not $CC, the network's native token, which has yet to find much lift from a recent Bithumb listing or Grayscale's proposed spot CC ETF. And since Rooz insists the company does not need the money to keep the lights on, the $365 million looks less like a lifeline and more like a war chest.
