Co-created by filmmaker Neil Blomkamp, this cyberpunk-themed battle royale offers unique gameplay mechanics, including replaceable limbs and jetpacks.

Set in a cyberpunk world, Gunzilla's latest game, Off The Grid, gained considerable attention since its early access release. In fact, it recently clinched the title of the #1 free-to-play game on the Epic Games Store, surpassing heavyweights like Fortnite and Genshin Impact.

As of now, it holds the #11 position on the store, while also being accessible on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Neil Blomkamp, acclaimed filmmaker of District 9 and Elysium, co-created Off The Grid. The game features unique cosmetic skins, including one modeled after popular streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, and has gained attention through collaborations with controversial figures like Dr. Disrespect.

As a result, Off The Grid currently ranks #30 in popularity among Twitch streams, with over 154,440 viewers tuning in to watch on October 11.

Blockchain Integration: GUNZ Subnet

One of the most aspects of Off The Grid is its blockchain integration. The game operates on a customized Avalanche subnet known as GUNZ, specifically designed to enhance the player experience.

This blockchain ecosystem would reportedly allow players to mint NFTs representing in-game items, such as weapons and skins. By minting these items, players gain complete ownership and can participate in secondary markets for in-game assets.

Currently, the GUNZ network is in its testnet phase and the crypto features are still being developed. According to The Block, players can use the in-game GUN token to purchase and trade NFTs in the future.

Gunzilla aims to expand the GUNZ ecosystem by enabling other gaming studios to leverage its SDK and built-in marketplace for their projects.

Gameplay Mechanics and Features

Off The Grid introduces gameplay mechanics that set it apart from traditional battle royale games. Players drop into a dynamic map where they can find replaceable limbs offering unique abilities, such as enhanced jumping or temporary invisibility.

Additionally, the game includes jetpacks for improved mobility, allowing players to reposition themselves quickly during combat.

The early access version of Off The Grid features a single mode called Extraction Royale, which combines elements from both battle royale and extraction shooter genres. Sixty players compete on a shrinking map, scavenging for loot while avoiding elimination.

Players can call in premade loadouts for cash gathered during the match, while also having to manage inventory space effectively.

A New Take on the Genre

The game's mechanics borrow heavily from established titles like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone but introduce fresh elements that enhance gameplay dynamics. For example, players can collect a variety of weapons divided into categories like assault rifles and sniper rifles, each with different rarity tiers. With 21 guns available at launch, players can enjoy diverse combat strategies.

The game is reportedly designed for gamers who seek immersive gameplay rather than those interested solely in crypto rewards. Critics have often pointed to the unsustainable nature of many blockchain games, which prioritize token distribution over gameplay.

However, Off The Grid aims to offer a compelling and enjoyable gaming experience that resonates with mainstream audiences. While players can earn perks without spending money, there are options for a battle pass and in-game microtransactions.
