With over $1.136 trillion in cumulative perp volume, nearly $2 billion in open interest, and a privacy-focused Layer 1 that just went live, Aster has built a serious case as the leading alternative to Hyperliquid. The question is whether it can turn that momentum into lasting market share.

How Does Aster Stack Up Right Now?

As of March 20, 2026, the DefiLlama perps dashboard tells a nuanced story. On the 24-hour chart, Aster sits at #4 in normalized volume with $2.561B, with edgeX and tradeXYZ edging ahead on the day. Daily rankings in perps are volatile by nature, and the weekly and monthly picture is more telling.

That pace has cooled as the initial wave of attention settled, but the platform has maintained a firm grip on the #2 tier.

How Big Is the Hyperliquid Gap?

Hyperliquid runs its own Layer 1 with sub-second execution, supports equities and commodities alongside crypto, and generates enough revenue to fund aggressive development without external capital. It has held 30% to 50% market share in on-chain perps for months. No single challenger has sustained a serious threat to that lead.

What Role Does CZ Play?

A significant one. Changpeng Zhao publicly disclosed buying around $2 million worth of $ASTER in November 2025, and the token surged by 1,500% to 2,800%, from roughly $0.08 to over $2. Wallet activity spiked past 330,000 early users, TVL temporarily jumped above $17 billion, and the endorsement gave Aster a level of visibility that typically takes years to build.

CZ has been careful to clarify that Binance has no official involvement and that his personal stake is modest. YZi Labs, his venture entity, holds a small position through early ecosystem ties. But the signal value was enormous. In a sector where attention is currency, CZ's backing put Aster on every trader's radar overnight.

What Could Close the Gap?

The biggest potential catalyst is Aster Chain, a privacy-focused Layer 1 using ZK proofs for private trades. If private on-chain trading attracts institutional participants or privacy-conscious whales, Aster could carve out a segment that no current competitor serves. Hyperliquid's strength is speed and depth. Aster's opportunity may be in offering something Hyperliquid does not: confidential execution.

The platform is also investing heavily in growth. DefiLlama data shows $83.6 million in incentives distributed over the past 30 days, an aggressive strategy to build liquidity and attract active traders. That approach mirrors what successful DeFi protocols have done historically to bootstrap network effects before transitioning to organic activity. How smoothly Aster manages that transition will say a lot about where it stands a year from now.

Aster does not need to overtake Hyperliquid tomorrow. Holding #2 in weekly and monthly volume while shipping a differentiated Layer 1 is a strong foundation. The perps sector is still expanding, and there is room for more than one major platform. Aster has earned its seat at the table.
