Axie Infinity Closes Season 21

Not the End for Classic

Sky Mavis’ flagship PlayAndEarn blockchain game Axie Infinity formally closed its 21st competitive season after the distribution of the $AXS rewards.

In an announcement on their Discord channel, the team closed the book on its final Axie Infinity: Classic competitive season. A total of 130,171.90 $AXS rewards were given to the top 300,000 players on the leaderboards. Jethro of Morfyus League clinched the title of Season 21 Champion with an MMR reaching 3,887.

 Web3Wire caught up with Axie Infinity pro player Atelo to get his thoughts on Season 21, the upcoming competitive events, and Axie Infinity: Origin.

“Kinda sad thoughts honestly since I've been loving v2 all throughout my Axie Infinity journey,” Atelo said. “Seeing it end makes me reminisce. V2 means everything to me, it made me very invested into the game and hooked me into playing it non-stop.

Although Season 21 was the final competitive season for Axie Infinity: Classic, the game continues to be the only source of $SLP in the ecosystem. There is a group within the Axie community that still wants to see the classic version of the game be live parallel to Axie Infinity: Origin. The good news is that V2 will stay at least until AxieCon as Sky Mavis is holding an Axie Classic World Championships during the highly anticipated meetup in Barcelona.

“Really fun event to commemorate v2's last moments,” were Atelo’s words when asked about the World Championships. “I am planning to participate in the qualifiers but as for the LAN [competition goes] I don't have the passport to travel. But if I had the chance I would be so down to go to that very exciting and fun event!

Sky Mavis is sponsoring players that qualify for the World Championships with travel and accommodations to AxieCon. There are other tournaments during the event, but these focus more on Axie Infinity: Origin, a somewhat different yet similar game to Classic, since Axie Infinity is transitioning to the game mode.

“Direct comparison [for] me is that Axie Classic has a more competitive edge,” the consistently top 100 pro player said. “[Classic is] harder for most people. but on the other hand, Origin is a broader game. [It] covers a lot of [what] people who are into these types of games [like], but also not losing that competitive edge which v2 offered. [It’s] just not the same in my opinion. 

Axie Infinity has been promoting Origin all over their social media channels as the game mode enters Phase 2 of its launch. The community should become more familiar with the game mode, especially since it will be the main game moving forward. Maybe some tips from an Axie Infinity Pro Player can help?

“[My] preparation [for] the transition is playing it as soon as it came out,” Atelo said. “Theory crafting things that [haven’t been] discovered yet, and giving life to undervalued Axies that wanders off the market. Think outside the meta and make a team you would enjoy and just have fun!” 

What is Axie Infinity:

Axie Infinity is a PlayAndEarn blockchain game where players breed, collect, and play with digital pets called Axies and earn from the interactions. It’s built on Ronin, an Ethereum-based side-chain developed by Vietnamese-based gaming studio Sky Mavis. The protocol put eyes on the PlayAndEarn gaming industry back in 2021. In addition, the team is building a digital nation where each community member comes together to play, earn, and live in Lunacia.
