Trump Says Iran Has Agreed They Will Not Have A Nuclear Weapon

President Trump confirms Iran has agreed not to pursue a nuclear weapon, with the US naval blockade potentially lifted by Labor Day as talks advance toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump Says Iran Has Agreed They Will Not Have A Nuclear Weapon

President Donald Trump has confirmed that Iran has agreed it "will not have a nuclear weapon," according to a report by @WalterBloomberg. The statement marks one of the clearest public declarations from the administration on the state of ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

The Blockade and the Path to a Deal

The Trump administration has indicated that the current US naval blockade of Iran could be officially lifted by Labor Day, contingent on progress in talks. Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding being discussed, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would become "unrestricted," Iran would be required to remove all mines from the strait within 30 days, and the US naval blockade would be lifted in proportion to the restoration of commercial shipping.

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a major maritime chokepoint for world energy trade, has been largely blocked since February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched an air war against Iran. Before the conflict, roughly 25% of the world's seaborne oil trade and 20% of global liquefied natural gas passed through the waterway.

US and Iranian negotiators have reached agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire and launch nuclear negotiations, though President Trump has yet to give his final approval, according to US officials and a regional source involved in mediation efforts. In its current form, the memorandum includes a commitment from Iran not to pursue a nuclear weapon, but no specific concessions beyond that.

Sticking Points and Market Impact

Trump is demanding that Tehran put specific nuclear concessions in writing as part of the preliminary agreement. Iranian negotiators had previously offered verbal assurances, but the president determined during a Situation Room meeting that those commitments were not strong enough.

The agreement under discussion would involve a 60-day ceasefire extension during which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and Iran would be able to freely sell oil. The deal would relieve pressure on the global oil supply and help avoid further escalation of the conflict. If finalized, a lifting of the blockade and reopening of the strait would be expected to stabilize global energy markets and restore trade flows through one of the world's most critical shipping corridors.

Talks remain fluid. Iranian state news outlet Fars has pushed back on some of Trump's public characterizations, saying they "raised issues that contradict the provisions of the agreement's text." The situation continues to develop rapidly, with both sides signaling a desire for a deal while disagreeing on the finer details.
