Fbi Leads Global Crackdown On Crypto Scam Networks

An FBI-led international operation has arrested 276 suspects and shut down nine crypto scam centers linked to 'pig butchering' investment fraud, with law enforcement in Dubai, Thailand, and China all playing key roles.

Fbi Leads Global Crackdown On Crypto Scam Networks

On April 29, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrests of 276 people and the dismantling of nine alleged cryptocurrency scam centers in a coordinated international operation. The FBI led the effort alongside law enforcement agencies in Dubai, Thailand, and China, all targeting transnational networks behind so-called "pig butchering" scams.

How the Scam Worked

Using long-term deception tactics, suspects allegedly built fake friendships or romantic relationships with victims before steering them toward fraudulent crypto investment platforms — a model the Justice Department identified as a classic "pig butchering" scheme. Prosecutors say victims in the United States and abroad were guided to transfer cryptocurrency into fake investment accounts, with scammers boasting of false profits and urging ever-larger contributions, often financed through personal loans. Once funds were sent, victims lost control of their assets, which were laundered through accounts controlled by the perpetrators.

Court records show defendants managed or worked for groups operating under names including "Ko Thet Company," "Sanduo Group," and "Giant Company." Dubai Police led the bulk of the arrests, detaining 275 individuals, while the Royal Thai Police apprehended one additional suspect. Three individuals now face federal wire fraud and money laundering charges in the Southern District of California, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Scale of the Problem

Authorities said the investigation has already identified millions of dollars in losses tied to these specific operations. The broader picture is stark: FBI data showed crypto-related fraud losses hit a record $11.3 billion last year, representing more than half of the $20.9 billion in total internet crime losses tracked by the agency.

This operation fits into a wider enforcement push by FBI San Diego. Its Operation Level Up, launched in 2024, has alerted nearly 9,000 victims and helped prevent an estimated $562 million in losses as of April 2026. Officials say the focus is now on dismantling the infrastructure behind crypto fraud, not just pursuing individual offenders.
