Musk Pledges a Grok-Generated Feature Film

Elon Musk has escalated his long-running campaign against Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, announcing that his AI tool Grok Imagine will produce a rival, full-length version of Homer's epic before the year is out. The tech mogul wrote on his social media platform X that Grok Imagine would make a "historically accurate" full-length feature version of Homer's ancient Greek poem. To illustrate the point, Musk shared a three-minute clip generated on Grok Imagine, describing the planned film as "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer."

The claim raises obvious questions. Homer's epic, believed to have been written in the late eighth century B.C., blends myth, folklore, and possible historical events, featuring giant Cyclopes, ghosts, and witches, and there is no consensus among historians that the Trojan War itself occurred as described. No exact runtime or formal release date has been confirmed beyond Musk's pledge to deliver the film by December 31.

Nolan's Film Shrugs Off the Culture War

The announcement is the latest move in a dispute that stretches back months. Musk has been criticising The Odyssey since February, when he reposted a user who claimed the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy was an insult to Homer. He later accused Nolan of "desecrating Homer" and argued that the director's decision to hire a diverse cast was a ploy to win an Oscar.

The controversy has done little to hurt the film at the box office. Nolan's The Odyssey tallied an estimated $124.5 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening weekend and $264.1 million globally, making it Nolan's best opening-weekend performance ever. The result topped The Dark Knight Rises' $249 million global launch in 2012. Nolan himself has been an outspoken critic of generative AI in filmmaking, arguing that younger audiences are quick to recognise and reject "AI slop."

Whether Grok Imagine can deliver a coherent feature-length production within five months remains to be seen. For now, Musk's announcement reads more as a cultural provocation than a concrete production roadmap.
