IRGC Claims Destruction of Amazon Infrastructure

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it struck and destroyed Amazon's central data infrastructure in Bahrain using several cruise missiles on Tuesday, July 21. The IRGC claimed responsibility for a missile strike targeting the infrastructure of a data center belonging to US technology company Amazon in Bahrain.

The IRGC's public relations office said its aerospace forces carried out the strike as part of the 24th wave of "Operation Nasr 2." In its statement, the IRGC said the attack was carried out in response to recent US airstrikes on the Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant, which it described as a non-military facility under construction in Iran.

The claim has not been independently verified, and neither Bahraini authorities nor Amazon immediately commented on the reported strike.

Wider Escalation Between Washington and Tehran

A new round of tensions between the US and Iran began on July 8, when, for the first time since the signing of a memorandum between Washington and Tehran, US armed forces carried out several waves of strikes on Iranian territory, citing a prior attack on a merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz. On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced the end of the ceasefire with Iran.

The IRGC also claimed to have destroyed a missile defense radar system and a US F-15 fighter jet in Jordan on the same day, and claimed strikes on US drone facilities at Bahrain's Sakhir Air Base a day earlier.

This is not Iran's first stated attack on Amazon infrastructure. In March, Iranian drones struck two AWS data centers in the United Arab Emirates. On April 1, Iran struck an AWS facility in Bahrain, and Bahrain's Interior Ministry confirmed its Civil Defence forces responded to a resulting fire at the site.

Also on April 1, the IRGC issued a warning naming 18 US companies as "legitimate targets," among them Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, Google, Meta, Apple, Nvidia and Oracle, citing the companies' alleged role in enabling US and Israeli strikes on Iranian officials.
