Irish Drug Dealer Transfers More Dormant Bitcoin

A wallet linked to convicted Irish drug trafficker Clifton Collins transferred another 500 $BTC, worth approximately $30.85 million, to Coinbase Prime on July 3, according to on-chain analytics firm Lookonchain. The move marks the third such recovery in 2026 and one of the most closely tracked law enforcement operations in Bitcoin's history.

A Pattern of Recoveries in 2026

Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) confirmed the seizure in an official statement on July 2, stating that the latest 500 $BTC, valued at approximately $30.91 million, was identified as proceeds of crime. The bureau said the recovery brings its total Bitcoin seizures in 2026 to 1,500 BTC, currently valued at over $90 million, all tied to the same case. CAB credited Europol's European Cybercrime Centre for its role in the operation.

Each of the three recoveries this year has followed the same playbook: a long-dormant 500 $BTC wallet suddenly moves, the funds land at an institutional custody or trading venue, and CAB confirms a seizure shortly after. The March recovery went to Coinbase, the May recovery routed through a Wintermute deposit address, and the latest batch has again landed at Coinbase Prime, suggesting the state is positioning the coins for eventual liquidation through regulated channels.

On-chain data from Arkham Intelligence shows wallets tagged "Clifton Collins" still holding roughly 4,500 $BTC worth more than $275 million at current market prices, suggesting nine of the original 12 wallets remain untouched.

The Story Behind the Stash

Collins, a former beekeeper, started growing and selling cannabis in 2005 and used the profits to buy Bitcoin in late 2011 and early 2012, when it was worth just a few dollars. By 2017, he had roughly 6,000 $BTC stored across 12 wallets, with private keys printed on paper and hidden inside a fishing rod case at a rented house in County Galway. That same year, Collins was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.

During his ordeal with the law, the drug dealer's landlord apparently cleared the property where he had hidden the papers with his private keys, discarding Collins's belongings, including the fishing gear, which was reportedly sent abroad and destroyed. Although the private keys to his wallets were considered lost since his imprisonment in 2017, Europol's advanced forensic technology has allowed access to be reopened to these dormant wallets.

The value of the original 6,000 $BTC stash has grown dramatically since Collins first purchased Bitcoin in 2011, turning an investment of roughly $30,000 into over $427 million today. CAB's next step will involve working alongside Europol in the technical processes to attempt to unlock the remainder of the hidden fortune.
