Altcoins Outperformed Bitcoin Over The Past Six Months?!

Data surfaced by @ElanInsights shows an equally-weighted basket of top-10 crypto assets including $XRP, $ETH, $SOL, and $DOGE outperformed $BTC over the past six months, challenging the assumption that Bitcoin holds up better in bearish conditions.

Altcoins Outperformed Bitcoin Over The Past Six Months?!

A chart making the rounds from @ElanInsights' strategy modelling tool is putting one of crypto's most widely held assumptions under the microscope. According to the data, investors holding an equally-weighted basket of the top 10 largest crypto assets, including $XRP, $ETH, $SOL, $DOGE, and others, would have outperformed $BTC itself over the past six months, even as all those assets declined sharply in value.

The Numbers That Challenge the Narrative

The gap was most pronounced in late March. At that point, $BTC was down approximately 37.8% on the six-month period, while the equally-weighted altcoin basket had fallen a comparatively modest 34.6%. In other words, the diversified basket lost less ground than Bitcoin on its own.

This runs directly counter to the conventional wisdom that $BTC acts as a relative safe haven within the crypto asset class during periods of sustained selling pressure. The dominant view has long been that altcoins suffer disproportionately in bearish conditions, with Bitcoin holding up better due to its deeper liquidity, institutional backing, and perceived store-of-value status. The @ElanInsights data, at least over this specific window, tells a different story.

It is worth noting that the broader context remains negative for the entire asset class. The altcoin basket outperforming $BTC is a relative observation, not an absolute one. All assets in the comparison were deeply in the red.

What This Means for Portfolio Construction

The findings raise a practical question for investors: does concentrating in $BTC during a downturn actually reduce risk exposure, or does a diversified basket of large-cap altcoins offer a more resilient profile? The @ElanInsights data suggests the latter may have been true over the period measured, though one six-month window should not be treated as a definitive verdict.

By the standard definition used by the CMC Altcoin Season Index, altcoin season is declared when 75% or more of the top 50 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation outperform Bitcoin over the last 90 days. The current reading has not consistently met that threshold, which makes the equally-weighted basket's outperformance all the more notable when it does emerge in the data.

@ElanInsights, described as a new entrant to the crypto analytics sector, is positioning its strategy modelling tool as a resource for serious investors and analysts looking to move beyond price-only analysis and into portfolio-level performance attribution.
