XRP Ledger Cleans House With Landmark Software Update

The $XRP Ledger has shipped version 3.2.0, its most consequential infrastructure release in recent memory, formally retiring the rippled server name and replacing it with xrpld across the entire ecosystem.

A Name Change With a Clear Message

The update renames the core server from rippled, historically known as the Ripple daemon, to xrpld, or XRP Ledger daemon. The change is part of XLS-0095 and is intended to reflect the XRP Ledger's status as an independent public blockchain rather than a system directly defined by Ripple, the commercial company.

Configuration paths, database directories, server metadata, and version labels now use the new naming structure. Validators and node operators may need to modify scripts and install updated configurations. Node operators and validators are being urged to upgrade immediately, and those who do not risk losing the ability to participate in consensus and serve the current ledger data.

What Else the Release Changes

Beyond the rebrand, the release is focused on stability and security rather than new features. The release introduces the fixCleanup3_2_0 amendment, which consolidates several approved security-related improvements. More than 30 older amendments are being retired through this cleanup, reducing protocol debt that had accumulated over years of network development.

The fixCleanup3_2_0 amendment addresses potential security breach risks, while new invariant checks and configurable nuDB block sizes boost performance. Optional TLS support for gRPC servers further enhances security. There are also new tools for developers and infrastructure providers, including a feature that allows applications to seamlessly retrieve XRP Ledger protocol information and server definitions without having to operate a live server.

Version 3.2.0 follows v3.1.3, which was activated in late May 2026 and focused on fixes related to NFT functionality and the Lending Protocol. The latest release builds on that foundation, prioritising long-term network reliability over headline-grabbing additions.

By formally separating the server software's identity from the Ripple brand, the XRPL community is building a paper trail of independence. Whether that shift carries broader market implications remains to be seen, but at the protocol level, the upgrade marks a clean break from the network's corporate origins.
