Ripple Backs Flutterwave At $3.2B Valuation To Scale African Payment Rails
Ripple has taken an equity stake in African fintech leader Flutterwave as part of its Series E round, embedding the $RLUSD stablecoin and $XRP Ledger into a payments network spanning 34 countries.

Ripple Takes Equity Stake in Africa's Leading Fintech
@Ripple has made a strategic equity investment in @theflutterwave as part of the African payments company's Series E funding round. Flutterwave, one of Africa's most valuable financial-technology startups, sold the stake to Ripple as it seeks to accelerate growth through payments expansion and strategic partnerships, with the investment pushing Flutterwave's valuation to $3.3 billion, according to CEO Olugbenga Agboola. The companies did not disclose the size of Ripple's investment in the round.
The deal represents one of the most direct attempts yet to route real-world African commerce through stablecoin infrastructure rather than the correspondent banking networks that have long dominated cross-border transactions on the continent. Agboola said three factors led Flutterwave to choose Ripple: its technology infrastructure, regulatory credibility, and the ability to move money more cheaply and quickly across borders.
$RLUSD and the XRP Ledger Enter Africa's Payment Stack
Under the agreement, Ripple's USD-backed stablecoin $RLUSD, the XRP Ledger, and Ripple's global payments network will be integrated into Flutterwave's payment stack. At its core, the partnership plugs three things into Flutterwave's existing network: $RLUSD as a primary settlement asset for high-volume corridors, the XRP Ledger for transaction clearing, and a unified API connecting Flutterwave's domestic network with Ripple Payments.
The integration will connect Flutterwave's network across 34 African countries with Ripple Payments, a global payments network that has processed more than $70 billion across over 90 markets. By merging traditional fiat payment methods, including local cards, mobile wallets, and bank transfers, with Ripple's enterprise blockchain technology, the partnership targets the historical friction points of African cross-border payments, such as multi-day delays and inflated foreign exchange margins.
The $RLUSD integration will go live in every country where Flutterwave operates, shaped by the specific requirements of each regulator. The Ripple deal joins a stablecoin stack the company has been assembling for over a year, which already includes the Circle Payment Network, Polygon as a default settlement chain, and Stripe-incubated Tempo as a settlement layer.
For Ripple, the investment is an entry point into Africa's fast-growing market for dollar-denominated payments, which Mastercard projects will reach $1.5 trillion by 2030. Flutterwave has raised more than $500 million to date and processed over one billion transactions valued at more than $50 billion, according to company data.
