President Trump is looking for a final settlement with Iran via a Coalition

President Trump has formally asked Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, and other regional powers to join the Abraham Accords as a condition of a final settlement with Iran, with U.S. envoys now tasked with completing the process.

President Trump is looking for a final settlement with Iran via a Coalition

President Donald Trump has formally requested that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, and other nations involved in ongoing Iran negotiations join the Abraham Accords as a condition of any final settlement with Tehran.

A Sweeping Ask During High-Stakes Talks

On Saturday, Trump held a phone call with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain to discuss the emerging deal with Iran. He told the leaders that after the war with Iran ends, he expects all of them who are still not part of the Abraham Accords or do not have peace agreements with Israel to join and normalize relations with the Jewish state, two U.S. officials said.

The leaders, especially those of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan, who do not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, were surprised by Trump's request. There was silence on the line, and Trump joked and asked if they were still there. He then told the leaders that his envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff would follow up on the issue in the coming weeks.

Trump subsequently made the request formally via his Truth Social account, writing: "By copy of this TRUTH, I am asking my Representatives to begin, and successfully complete, the process of signing these Countries into the already Historic Abraham Accords." He also floated the idea that Iran itself could eventually join the Accords if a successful agreement with the United States is reached.

Political Backing and Significant Obstacles

Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican known for his support of Israel, praised the idea, saying that if Arab and Muslim allies in the region actually agree to join the Abraham Accords as a result of the Iran negotiations, it would be one of the most significant agreements in the history of the Middle East.

The proposed framework reportedly includes a possible 60-day ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and future negotiations around Iran's nuclear programme. However, deep-seated disagreements remain unresolved, particularly around sanctions relief, Iran's uranium stockpile, and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

Although Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously shown openness toward ties with Israel, the war in Gaza and growing anger across the Arab world have complicated matters. Riyadh has maintained that any normalization process remains strictly contingent upon a definitive, irreversible path toward the creation of a Palestinian state, something Israel refuses to accept.

The Abraham Accords were announced in August and September 2020 and signed in Washington, D.C. on September 15, 2020, under Trump's first term. The UAE and Bahrain became the first Arab countries to formally recognize Israel since Jordan in 1994. In July 2025, it was reported that the second Trump administration was already seeking to expand the Accords to include Syria, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.
