Sui Blockchain Comes Back Online After Network Outage

Six-Hour Stall Traced to Gas Charging Bug

The Sui blockchain is back online after a roughly six-hour network outage on May 28. The core team confirmed full operations resumed at 20:32 UTC, following a stall that began at 14:15 UTC. According to the team, a crash bug in the gas charging logic, introduced in the 1.72 release, caused the halt. No user funds were lost.

The Layer-1 blockchain experienced an unforeseen outage that completely halted block production and transaction validation, with validators suddenly stopping processing operations. Block explorers including Suiscan and SuiVision showed the latest confirmed blocks remaining static, meaning users were unable to send, receive, or interact with smart contracts on the network. Protocols affected during the downtime included Cetus, NAVI, Panzerdogs, and stablecoin USDC. A full incident review is expected in the coming days.

A Recurring Reliability Problem

The $SUI token fell roughly 8% as block finality halted across the network's decentralised applications, marking the layer-1's second major stall in five months. Sui last suffered a network stall in January, going down for about six hours. The outage is the network's third in 18 months.

Sui is a layer-1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs that bills itself as "high-performance" and is often compared to Solana as a fast, high-throughput alternative to Ethereum. The stall follows a six-hour consensus outage in January, which was traced to a validator consensus bug that halted activity while user funds stayed safe. The pattern is drawing scrutiny. Blockchain outages remain a closely watched issue for traders and developers, particularly for networks that market themselves as high-performance infrastructure for decentralised finance and gaming applications.

The core team has not yet published a post-mortem, but one is expected to outline the root cause and detail preventive measures ahead.
