Solana Set To Be 20x More Efficient
Solana officially deploys the P-Token upgrade on mainnet, cutting token instruction compute costs by up to 96% and freeing roughly 13% of block space, giving $SOL-based applications up to 20x more efficiency.

Solana Deploys P-Token Upgrade to Mainnet
@Solana has officially deployed the P-Token upgrade on mainnet, marking one of the most significant efficiency improvements in the network's history. The overhaul targets the compute cost of token instructions, cutting them by approximately 96%, while freeing up to 13% of available block space without changing existing block size limits.
The upgrade is codified under SIMD-0266, a protocol proposal that introduces the optimized token program, known as P-Token, which dramatically improves the efficiency of all token usage on the network and opens up the potential to support more complex transactions.
The main impact is freeing up block compute units, allowing more transactions to be packed into a block, while application developers benefit from significantly lower compute consumption when interacting with the token program.
The upgrade reduces compute usage for token transfers from around 1,400 units to approximately 70, with lower compute requirements potentially cutting transfer costs by up to 20x while increasing overall network capacity.
What It Means for Developers and the Broader Ecosystem
High-frequency protocols and $SOL-based applications stand to benefit most directly. Decentralized exchanges may see lower swap costs and faster transaction processing, NFT platforms could experience reduced minting and trading costs, and applications involving frequent micro-transactions such as gaming, payments, or AI agent services may also benefit from lower network fees.
Crucially, the upgrade is designed to be non-disruptive. The current token program's instruction set is fully backwards compatible with P-Token, meaning existing applications and wallets will continue to work as expected.
P-Token represents one of the most significant efficiency improvements in Solana's history, optimizing the network's most frequently used program to free up substantial resources for other applications while reducing costs for users. The move positions Solana more competitively for both retail scale and institutional adoption as demand for high-throughput on-chain infrastructure continues to grow.
