Pi Network Latest Developments

Pi Network has had a busy April and early May 2026, distributing its first KYC validator rewards, advancing developer tools on testnet, completing the Protocol 22 mainnet upgrade, and sending both co-founders to Consensus 2026 in Miami as Protocol 23 smart contract launch approaches on May 11.

Pi Network Latest Developments

Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) has moved through one of its busiest development periods on record between early April and early May 2026, distributing its first KYC validator rewards, advancing developer tools, completing a mainnet protocol upgrade, and placing both co-founders on stage at Consensus 2026 in Miami ahead of a smart contract launch scheduled for May 11.

KYC Rewards, Developer Tools, and a Human Verification Milestone

In early April, more than one million Pioneers received the first round of KYC validator rewards in $PI, paid directly on the mainnet. These validators had helped process identity checks for millions of accounts, with the distribution drawing from a pool funded by both users and the Pi Foundation.

On the developer side, the team released an RPC server on the testnet on April 8 to support app development, followed by the activation of the network's first smart contract on April 17, designed for automated recurring payments. These tools allow developers to test programmable features ahead of a broader mainnet rollout.

Pi also reported a human verification milestone in late April, noting that over one million verified users had collectively completed more than 526 million identity validation tasks. The network now counts over 421,000 active nodes, supported by more than one million CPUs and backed by 18 million KYC-verified users.

Protocol 22 Complete, Protocol 23 on Deck

The Pi mainnet successfully upgraded to Protocol 22, with a hard deadline requiring all mainnet nodes to move to the updated version. The upgrade aimed to unify the network's protocol version, improve stability, and lay the technical foundation for future features including a decentralized exchange.

Protocol 23 is widely expected to be the more consequential upgrade, enabling smart contracts on the Pi network for the first time, with activation scheduled for May 11. All node operators must complete the transition from Protocol 22.1 to Protocol 23, with a final compliance deadline of May 15, 2026. Nodes that fail to upgrade risk losing network synchronization. The upgrade is also expected to enable the launch of PiDex, a native decentralized exchange, and a utility-focused Launchpad.

The Protocol 23 smart contract launch marks the project's most prominent mainstream industry milestone to date, arriving as the network completes its most active development stretch.

Alongside the technical calendar, Pi Network confirmed co-founder Nicolas Kokkalis joined a panel at Consensus 2026 in Miami on May 7 titled "How to Prove You're Human in an AI World (Without Doxing Yourself)," while co-founder Dr. Chengdiao Fan presented on May 6 in a session titled "Aligning Web3, AI, and Blockchain for Utility." The event ran from May 5 to 7 and was expected to draw over 20,000 attendees. Kokkalis's panel placed Pi's KYC-verified user base at the center of a pressing question in the AI era: how to confirm a user is human when AI can convincingly simulate human behavior. Pi argues its 18 million verified users and 526 million completed validation tasks give it a structural answer that pure code-based blockchains cannot replicate.
