Huang Makes His X Debut With a Statement on Open AI

@JensenHuang, founder and CEO of @NVIDIA, has joined X, and he wasted no time making his position clear. His first post shared an industry letter co-signed by major US technology companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Dell, and Palantir, calling for the advancement of open-weight AI models.

"AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty. The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models," Huang wrote.

The letter argues that US technology leadership can only be secured if open-weight models remain available for anyone to download, modify, and run on their own infrastructure. The signatories drew a direct parallel to early software development, which resisted calls for tight centralized control.

Sovereignty, Hardware, and the Case for Open Models

The letter also recognized the economic significance of open-weight AI, noting that open weights expand access to the AI economy, allowing startups, businesses, universities, and public institutions to build on advanced models without training one from scratch or paying frontier-model prices for every task.

The push aligns with a broader strategic direction Huang has been building toward. "Open models are the lifeblood of innovation and the engine of global participation in the AI revolution, for students, scientists, startups and entire industries," Huang has said previously. The vision is one of decentralized intelligence, where nations and organizations build AI capabilities on top of open foundations running on $NVDA hardware.

His argument is straightforward: cheaper, open models will bring AI to more people and businesses, increasing demand for the chips, data centers, and computing power Nvidia sells. Huang has also argued that restricting open models in the name of national security could actually leave the US more vulnerable, adding that outside researchers can inspect open models, expose weaknesses, and build defenses.

The timing of Huang's X debut underscores just how central the open-versus-closed AI debate has become. With Washington weighing restrictions on Chinese open-source models and companies reassessing their AI infrastructure costs, his public endorsement of frontier open models carries significant weight for the industry.
