Hoskinson Defends Cardano Legacy Over Ethereum Past
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson pushed back during a recent interview with The Block, arguing that his brief time at Ethereum $ETH has overshadowed a decade of work building Cardano $ADA into a major blockchain network.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson pushed back during a recent interview with The Block, expressing frustration that questions about Ethereum's founding story continue to follow him despite years of work building an independent blockchain network.
Hoskinson said he has answered the same questions hundreds of times and called on reporters to research the topic before asking it again. His central argument was straightforward: his brief involvement with Ethereum $ETH, which lasted around six months, has attracted disproportionate attention relative to what he has built since.
A Decade of Cardano Work
Hoskinson was one of Ethereum's original co-founders alongside Vitalik Buterin. But he departed early in the project's history and went on to co-found Input Output Global (formerly IOHK) and launch Cardano $ADA. Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain positioned somewhere between Bitcoin's monetary model and Ethereum's programmable infrastructure.
Hoskinson pointed to Cardano's peak valuation as a measure of what that work has produced. The token reached an all-time high of $3.09 in September 2021, with a market cap at the peak exceeding $100 billion and placing Cardano in the top three cryptocurrencies globally.
The interview is the latest in a series of public appearances in which Hoskinson has sought to shift the conversation toward Cardano's own record. In a separate interview with CoinDesk on July 23, Hoskinson was sharply critical of Ethereum's governance model, arguing the network lacks an on-chain treasury capable of sustainably funding long-term development. He has contrasted that with Cardano's approach, which funds development through an on-chain treasury backed by protocol-level fees.
A Pattern of Redirecting the Narrative
The frustration Hoskinson displayed with The Block is consistent with a broader pattern. Hoskinson claims he invested $450 million of his own funds into bootstrapping the Cardano network. He has argued repeatedly that this kind of long-term commitment, rather than his early exit from Ethereum, should define how his career is judged.
In another recent appearance, Hoskinson argued that Cardano's formal on-chain governance and ability to execute upgrades make it better equipped to respond to existential technological threats such as advances in quantum computing.
Whether the media cycle shifts to match that framing remains to be seen. For now, the Ethereum founding story continues to surface in almost every major interview, a dynamic Hoskinson appears increasingly unwilling to accept.
