Clearstream Adds XRP, XLM To Crypto Custody

Clearstream, the post-trade services arm of Deutsche Börse Group, has expanded its institutional crypto custody platform to cover six additional cryptocurrencies: $XRP, Stellar ($XLM), Cardano ($ADA), Solana ($SOL), Litecoin ($LTC) and Avalanche ($AVAX).

The new additions join Bitcoin and Ether, which were already supported under Clearstream's fully regulated crypto custody service launched last year. The service operates using Crypto Finance as sub-custodian, a MiCAR-regulated entity also within the Deutsche Börse Group, ensuring the expanded offering remains compliant with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation.

Meeting Institutional Demand for MiCA-Compliant Assets

Clearstream said the expansion caters to the "growing importance of MiCA-compliant crypto assets in institutional finance" and is designed to bridge the gap between traditional financial infrastructure and the crypto asset world.

Clearstream selected these assets based on institutional client demand and their ability to comply with MiCA. Each asset underwent a compliance review to ensure it meets EU standards for transparency, AML and operational security.

The inclusion of $XRP is particularly notable given the token's prolonged legal battles with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. While the US regulatory landscape remains fragmented, the EU's MiCA framework provides a path for assets like XRP to gain institutional acceptance in Europe, regardless of their status in other jurisdictions.

A Broader Shift in Traditional Finance

In early 2025, Deutsche Börse Group announced that Clearstream would begin offering crypto custody and settlement services to its institutional clients, with the service officially going live in April 2025. The latest expansion builds on that foundation, widening the range of assets available to clients through Clearstream's existing account infrastructure.

Clients of Clearstream's ICSD can use their existing accounts to access crypto custody, lowering the operational barriers for institutions looking to add digital assets to their portfolios. Clearstream is one of the world's largest settlement and custody firms, providing infrastructure across 60 different markets.

The move reflects a wider trend of traditional financial institutions stepping deeper into digital assets within regulated frameworks, particularly as MiCA sets clearer rules across the EU.
