Circle Ceo Sees "Tremendous Opportunity" For Yuan-Backed Stablecoin Within 3 To 5 Years

@circle CEO Jeremy Allaire (@jerallaire) has predicted that China could launch a yuan-backed stablecoin within three to five years, describing the prospect as a "tremendous opportunity" in an interview with Reuters in Hong Kong.

Allaire framed the development as part of a broader shift in how nations compete on currency. "If there's currency competition, you want your currency to have the best features possible. This is becoming a technological competition," he said.

The comments land as China is reported to be weighing options to extend the yuan's global reach through digital assets, despite its 2021 ban on domestic crypto trading and mining remaining in place. Chinese authorities have moved to tighten the regulatory perimeter further in 2026, blocking offshore yuan-pegged stablecoins without prior licensing. That regulatory stance would likely concentrate any eventual rollout in Hong Kong, which has been building out its own crypto licensing framework as a more permissive jurisdiction for digital asset activity.
