Pi Network's final Protocol 23 upgrade lands Monday with smart contracts in tow

Pi Network's Protocol 23 activates May 18, adding native smart contracts and dApps to turn $PI into a programmable Layer 1. The node deadline has been extended to May 19, while Pi App Studio now converts AI-generated apps into Pi-native apps in minutes.

Pi Network's final Protocol 23 upgrade lands Monday with smart contracts in tow

Pi Network is preparing to cross one of the most significant milestones in its history. The final Protocol 23 upgrade is scheduled to activate on May 18, converting $PI from a basic mainnet into a programmable Layer 1 blockchain with native smart contract and dApp support. The upgrade has been confirmed by @PiCoreTeam.

The move follows a sequenced upgrade cycle. According to CoinMarketCap, v23.0 is the culmination of earlier updates, including v21.2 on April 6 and v22.1 on April 22, each building toward full Web3 readiness. Protocol 23 introduces native support for smart contracts, decentralized applications, and tokenization, transitioning the network from a basic blockchain into a programmable platform capable of supporting DeFi and complex dApps.

Node Deadline Extended to May 19

To keep validators properly synced ahead of the hard fork, @PiCoreTeam pushed the mandatory node upgrade deadline from May 15 to May 19. The extension gives the network's node operators additional time to complete the transition without risking disconnection. CoinMarketCap describes the v23.0 package as a foundational improvement in performance, security, and readiness for Web3 functionality. The upgrade also lays the groundwork for Testnet2 and a future Pi DEX platform.

Further protocol upgrades are already on the calendar. Version 24.1 is slated for completion by May 25, and version 25.1 by June 8, each adding incremental improvements to node stability and network throughput.

Pi App Studio Opens Up to AI-Built Apps

Alongside the Protocol 23 push, Pi Network has updated Pi App Studio to lower the barrier for app creation significantly. Per the official Pi Network blog, creators can now build apps using external AI tools, including Codex, Claude Code, Replit, Cursor, and Lovable, and then use Pi App Studio to convert those externally created apps into Pi-native apps. The process relies on tailored copy-and-paste prompts that handle Pi SDK integration, environment verification, and $PI payment setup automatically.

The practical effect is that both technical developers and non-technical product builders can now reach Pi's user base, reported to include over 60 million Engaged Pioneers, without rebuilding integrations from scratch. The Pi Core Team has framed the update as a direct response to the distribution bottleneck in the AI software era: as AI lowers the cost of building apps, getting those apps in front of real users becomes the hard part, and Pi's network is positioned to solve that.

Taken together, Protocol 23 and the Pi App Studio update represent Pi Network's most concentrated push yet to move from infrastructure build-out to active ecosystem utility.
