UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Labour leader, saying he is not best placed to lead the party into the next general election. A leadership contest opens July 9.

Starmer Steps Down After Mounting Party Pressure

Keir Starmer announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader on Monday, June 22, making a televised statement outside 10 Downing Street. The announcement followed a weekend of speculation over his political future in the aftermath of Andy Burnham's victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Starmer said he had consulted with ministers about whether he remained the right person to lead Labour into the next general election. "I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision," he said in a televised statement outside Downing Street. He will remain in post until a successor is chosen.

The resignation followed months of turmoil, with some members of his own party criticising his leadership and saying he had not been able to deliver the rapid change needed after taking office following 14 years of Conservative Party rule.

Many in Starmer's Labour Party had written to him asking him to step down following local elections in May, which saw the party lose more than 1,000 seats on local councils, results widely interpreted as a repudiation of Labour's performance under his leadership.

Starmer and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves had also been battling discontent over fiscal policy within their own ranks, while welfare reforms and the appointment of Peter Mandelson as U.S. ambassador further damaged intra-party relations.

What Comes Next: Leadership Timeline

Starmer asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable, with nominations opening on July 9 and completed by the summer recess, to ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.

Starmer submitted his resignation to King Charles III on Monday morning. Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, is highly tipped to succeed Starmer as Prime Minister following a wave of internal support, and could take over as early as September.

With his poll ratings rendering him one of the most unpopular Prime Ministers of the century, Starmer became the sixth British PM to resign from their position rather than losing at an election in the last 10 years.
