Israel and Lebanon extend ceasefire for 45 days
The US State Department announced a 45-day extension of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire after two days of talks in Washington, with political negotiations set to resume in June.

Washington Talks Yield Another Extension
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire by 45 days, the @StateDept announced on Friday. "The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said. The talks, held in Washington on Thursday and Friday, were described as "highly productive," with both countries set to reconvene negotiations on June 2 and June 3.
The 2026 Israel-Lebanon ceasefire was originally a 10-day truce agreed on April 16, brokered by the United States to halt active fighting and create conditions for further negotiations toward a longer-term settlement. On April 23, President Donald Trump announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire. The latest 45-day extension is therefore the third since the original pause was put in place.
This week's talks were the sides' third meeting since Israel intensified air attacks on Lebanon after Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel on March 2, three days into the US-Israeli war on Iran. Hezbollah is not a formal party to the agreement. Hezbollah, while not formally part of the agreement, indicated it would respond to any violations, raising concerns about the stability of the ceasefire.
Pentagon Security Track and Ongoing Tensions
A second, security-focused track for the talks will be launched through the Pentagon, starting on May 29 and featuring military delegations from both countries. "We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border," Pigott said.
Despite the extension, the ceasefire remains fragile on the ground. The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon after reporting hostile aircraft alerts and launches from across the border, and Lebanon's health ministry said nearly 40 people were wounded in Israeli strikes near the coastal city of Tyre. Fought in parallel to the US-Iran conflict, Israel's war in Lebanon has rumbled on since the April 16 ceasefire, though hostilities have largely been contained to southern Lebanon.
