BlackRock, Strategy, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, and five other firms have pledged $15 million over three years to fund Bitcoin security research, launching the Bitcoin Security Consortium (BSC), one of the first coordinated industry efforts to support the open-source developers who maintain the network.

Who Is Involved

The founding members include Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, Galaxy, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, and Blockstream, representing Bitcoin holders, custodians, exchanges, infrastructure providers, payments companies, and asset managers.

Day-to-day coordination falls to Mike Schmidt, executive director of Brink, a nonprofit that funds Bitcoin open-source developers, who takes on the role as a volunteer. The announcement did not disclose individual contributions, initial recipients, or how much of the funding represents new commitments.

"Bitcoin Core developers do incredibly important work," BlackRock digital assets head Robert Mitchnick said, adding that the group would make additional funding available for Bitcoin's long-term security.

Why It Matters

The consortium's primary focus is preparing Bitcoin's cryptographic foundations for a future era of quantum computing, which researchers warn could eventually threaten the network's security model. Quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography do not currently exist. However, the urgency is building. Research in 2026, led by Google's 20-fold reduction in resource estimates, compressed the timeline from "someday" to "plausibly within a decade or two," and Bitcoin's defense has formally begun with BIP-360 merged and a migration debate underway.

Security researchers generally view a transition to quantum-resistant cryptography as one of the most complex upgrades Bitcoin could face, involving extensive research, testing, developer coordination, and community consensus. Bitcoin's core development has historically been funded through nonprofits such as Brink and Chaincode Labs, as well as grants from individual companies, rather than coordinated support from large institutional holders. The new consortium aims to change that.

Galaxy this week also launched a separate $5 million initiative for quantum-resistant signatures, wallet migration tools, and security audits, though the consortium did not say whether that commitment is included in the $15 million total.
