Job Hunting Is Now Your AI Versus Their AI
AI tools have transformed job hunting on both sides of the hiring table. Candidates use AI to build resumes while employers deploy screening bots, creating a bot-versus-bot standoff that is reshaping recruitment.
Candidates and Employers Both Turn to AI
The modern job search has become an arms race. Applications per job posting in the United States have roughly doubled since 2022, and candidates have responded by leaning heavily on artificial intelligence to keep pace. According to a HireVue report, about two-thirds of job candidates now say they use AI when applying for jobs, including for resume and cover letter writing, interview practice, and career guidance.
Employers have not stood still. AI adoption among HR professionals surged from 58% in 2024 to 72% in 2025, according to HireVue's global survey of more than 4,000 respondents. The result is what many recruiters now describe as a bot-versus-bot standoff: AI-generated applications flowing into AI-powered screening systems, with human judgment increasingly removed from the early stages of the process.
Trust Gap Widens on Both Sides
Despite the rapid rollout, confidence in these systems is uneven. Confidence in AI systems among HR leaders grew from 37% in 2024 to 51% in 2025, reflecting increased comfort with AI-driven hiring recommendations, yet that still leaves nearly half of HR teams with reservations. Candidates are even more skeptical. Pew Research Center found that 66% of Americans would not want to apply for a job with an employer that uses AI to help make hiring decisions.
Employers are contending with surging application counts, amplified by job seekers' own use of AI tools to generate tailored resumes and apply at scale. In practice, this creates a feedback loop: as candidates automate applications, employers automate screening, and the first interview becomes less a conversation and more a standardised data-collection step.
Some companies are now pushing back against the automation cycle by requiring more in-person interviews specifically to confirm a real human is behind the application. Around 62% of employers already reject unpersonalised AI resumes, and nearly 20% reject all AI usage outright, signalling that the blanket use of AI tools carries real risk for candidates.
The tension is unlikely to ease soon. The dynamic creates a sort of AI arms race between candidates and employers, with each side deploying more sophisticated tools in response to the other. For job seekers, the challenge is no longer just standing out from other humans. It is standing out from other algorithms.
