Picture a future where sufficiently advanced AI algorithms can systematically crack wallet seed phrases. The consequences would be severe: mass wallet thefts, catastrophic financial losses, and a fundamental collapse of trust in blockchain and decentralized finance. It is, for now, a thought experiment. But it is one worth sitting with.

Research published by HackRead puts the theoretical risk into perspective. The sheer number of possible seed phrase combinations makes it practically impossible for AI to recover enough words to breach a wallet. Cracking eight missing words, for instance, would take 174 times the age of the universe. A 12-word seed phrase represents 3.4 x 10^38 possible combinations, and even a machine testing one trillion combinations per second would need roughly 10.8 quintillion years to crack it. The conclusion is clear: AI is not a current threat to seed phrase security, provided the phrase remains secret. That said, the findings are based on current AI capabilities and computational limits.

A seed phrase is a sequence of 12 to 24 randomly generated words that serves as the master key to a cryptocurrency wallet, generated by the BIP39 standard from a fixed 2,048-word list. Anyone who has your seed phrase can move your crypto, which is why it must be stored offline and never shared.

The Real Threat: AI-Assisted Fraud and Malware

While brute-force cracking remains out of reach, AI is already being used against crypto users in more practical ways. Regular crypto investors are facing an alarming new threat from scammers armed with advanced AI. Reports of generative AI-assisted crypto scams rose 456% between mid-2024 and mid-2025. According to the FBI, nearly 150,000 crypto-related fraud complaints were filed in 2024, with over $3.9 billion in reported losses in the U.S. alone.

The primary danger AI introduces is social engineering attacks designed to trick users into transferring their own funds, not technically cracking a device itself. Criminals with minimal coding skills can use uncensored AI to write programs that empty crypto wallets or install keyloggers to capture seed phrases. Separately, Kaspersky discovered SparkCat malware that extracts seed phrases from images using optical character recognition (OCR).

The longer-term picture is also worth watching. In theory, more than half of blockchain exploits in 2025 could have been executed autonomously by already-operational AI agents, according to research from Anthropic, which showed that AI agents are becoming increasingly capable of executing larger exploits while the costs of such attacks drop rapidly.

The bottom line remains simple. Never share your seed phrase with anyone, including AI tools, support staff, or third-party platforms. No legitimate wallet provider will ever ask for your seed phrase. For storage, the safest practice is to write the phrase on paper or engrave it on a metal backup plate, and never create a digital copy. AI is poised to strengthen crypto security over time, but the weakest link will always be human behaviour.
