U.S. Government Moves Seized Bitfinex Bitcoin To Coinbase Prime
The U.S. government has transferred 8.2 $BTC, worth approximately $606,000, to @CoinbasePrime, according to on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain.
The bitcoin was originally seized as part of the high-profile Bitfinex hack investigation. The 2016 breach remains one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history, with around 120,000 $BTC stolen from the exchange. U.S. authorities later recovered the majority of those funds and arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan in 2022 in connection with the alleged laundering of the stolen assets, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The latest transfer represents a small fraction of the U.S. government's broader digital asset holdings, which run into the billions of dollars. Movements of seized crypto to platforms such as @CoinbasePrime are typically associated with liquidation processes, though the government has not publicly confirmed the purpose of this specific transaction.
