FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried demands temporary release from the Metropolitan Detention Center, citing inadequate internet access as a significant hindrance to preparing his defense.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the troubled cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is demanding his release from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn due to poor internet access.
The American entrepreneur and investor is preparing for his upcoming trials and claims that inadequate internet service is hampering his ability to gather evidence for his defense.
Sam’s lawyers argue that the facility has not provided him with reliable internet access, hindering his ability to secure essential documents.
These documents are crucial to proving his innocence concerning the collapse of FTX in November 2022. Sam is allowed to use an internet-enabled laptop only twice a week, a situation his lawyers deem unacceptable due to the limited internet access.
In addition to the internet issues, the legal team also expressed concerns about other subpar conditions at the detention center. These include restrictions on bringing food and water into the visitor access room.
The presiding judge had earlier suggested a temporary postponement of the trial, scheduled for early October, but Sam's lawyers are pushing for a temporary release instead. The case continues to unfold as the legal team and the judge weigh the options for proceeding.
