Johnny Ng stated his willingness to invite the Ethereum founder to visit Hong Kong to understand its policies better.
Following remarks by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin at the Web3 Transition Summit in Singapore, Johnny Ng, a Hong Kong lawmaker and engineer, has publicly responded.
Buterin had raised concerns about the long-term stability of Hong Kong's friendly stance towards cryptocurrency projects. He had also advised startups to closely examine Hong Kong's political stability before setting up operations there.
In a Twitter statement on September 15, Johnny Ng said that he thinks Buterin "does not understand and do not understand the situation in Hong Kong." He was willing to invite the Ethereum founder to visit Hong Kong for a better understanding.
"I sincerely invite Mr. Vitalik to come to Hong Kong to understand the situation. I am willing to coordinate with relevant institutions and enterprises to share the situation in Hong Kong with them," Ng said.
Buterin had expressed that he was even more puzzled by the recent complicated relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China. Johnny Ng responded that there were no complications between mainland China and Hong Kong.
“The country and Hong Kong do not have the complications Vitalik said. The central government has always expressed support for the development of 'one country, two systems' in Hong Kong, so Hong Kong has room to formulate policies on virtual assets and welcomes global compliance companies to develop in Hong Kong.”
Further elaborating on the stability of Hong Kong's legislative process, Johnny Ng added:
“As a member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I would like to share with you that every policy or legislation in Hong Kong will go through a period of discussion, including government policy writing, public consultation, discussions in multiple committees of the Legislative Council and the General Assembly, etc. So I hope Vitalik understands the actual situation.”
In conclusion, Johnny Ng addressed Buterin’s concerns about the potential instability of Hong Kong's policies and friendliness towards cryptocurrencies. He stated that Hong Kong's policies and laws do not change overnight and have passed through extensive social consensus and formal procedures. “Therefore, I can tell Mr. Vitalik that Hong Kong's policies are very stable,” he concluded.
Johnny Ng's detailed responses to Vitalik Buterin's concerns show a willingness for open dialogue and defense of Hong Kong's existing legislative processes and policy stability, especially concerning the crypto space. Whether this leads to further discussions or even a visit by Buterin to Hong Kong remains to be seen.
