Axie Infinity Gamers Unite in Spain for First AxieCon

The community of the popular PlayAndEarn blockchain game, Axie Infinity, has all hands on deck to prepare for the first Axie Infinity Convention (AxieCon) in Barcelona, Spain.

With AxieCon just a few days away, different groups have been holding contests to win passes to the much-anticipated event. The Axie Infinity: Classic world championship qualifiers alone gave out 16 paid trips to the convention, along with some $AXS, to the top 16 players (east and west) who will compete in the finals. The team also held a summer-themed art contest, Summer Lovin’: The winning entries will be featured during the event in Barcelona.

“Over the last year, we have experimented with regional meet-ups all over the world that have produced great results,” Andrew Campbell, Axie Infinity’s head of ESports, told BSCNews. “It seemed only natural to up the ante and do something larger with more programming and also introduce more people to Axie Infinity and the Web3 ecosystem. AxieCon is the culmination of our work to gather our global community together. ”

On the community side, QU3ST, the guild leading the Axie Creator Program, gave away 10 tickets to AxieCon, including paying for $2,000 for expenses to the winner of their Axie Infinity Origin Story Contest. The Axie Sisters, popular Idols within the community, held auditions for their group, gave out 15 AxieCon passes and paid for the first-place finisher to attend the event. AxieChat, a weekly Axie recap podcast, has been handing out AxieCon passes every week in August to those who create hype videos promoting AxieCon.

“We’ve been planning the event since the end of the last year when COVID still had most of the world shut down,” Campbell said. “It was a scary time to commit to an event like AxieCon, but we were confident it would be an important part of empowering our most hardcore contributors.”

The team has been slowly releasing the AxieCon schedule and lineup of speakers. AxieCon kicks off with a registration party at the Go Beach Club on Sept. 7 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Doors open at 10:15am the following day to welcome everyone to the convention. ESports tournaments for both Axie Infinity: Origin and Classic will be held during the convention, with a total prize pool of about $1 million.

Guest speakers include Arianna Simpson from a16z., the creators of Second Life, and many others, Campbell said.

“You can expect some updates on the roadmap, keynotes from founders, new announcements, esports finals, and more!” Campbell said.
