Crew Rescued After Apache Goes Down Near Strait of Hormuz
A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to a report by The New York Times. The military helicopter gunship went down in the area of the Strait of Hormuz with its two crew members safely rescued. The cause of the incident has not been established. Citing two individuals with knowledge of the incident, reports indicate it remains unclear whether the Apache was shot down, experienced a technical issue, or went down for some other reason.
The incident comes as U.S. forces maintain a significant military presence in and around the strait as part of an ongoing effort to keep the critical waterway open to commercial shipping. U.S. attack helicopters had previously sunk six Iranian attack boats in the Strait of Hormuz in early May 2026, amid rising tensions over commercial shipping. That operation, known as Project Freedom, has placed substantial American air and naval assets in the region.
A High-Stakes Waterway
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway through which about 20% of the world's oil flows. U.S. forces in the area operate within a broader defensive architecture built around ballistic missile defense-capable destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, unmanned systems, and 15,000 U.S. personnel.
CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper has previously stated that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple cruise missiles, drones, and small boats at ships under U.S. protection, adding that American forces defeated each of those threats. The downing of the Apache adds a new and unresolved dimension to an already tense operational environment. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
