Gabbard Cites Husband's Cancer Diagnosis
@TulsiGabbard announced Friday that she is resigning as US Director of National Intelligence, citing her husband Abraham Williams's diagnosis with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Her resignation, submitted in a formal letter to President Trump, is effective June 30, 2026.
In the letter, Gabbard said she "cannot in good conscience" ask her husband to face the fight alone while continuing in such a demanding role. Williams, a videographer, has stood by Gabbard through military deployments and multiple political campaigns over their eleven years of marriage.
Gabbard informed Trump of her decision in a meeting at the Oval Office on Friday. Trump responded with praise on Truth Social and named Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas as acting director.
A Turbulent 15 Months at the Helm
Gabbard was confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 in a 52-48 vote, with Mitch McConnell joining all Democrats in opposition. She led the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for roughly 15 months, overseeing all 18 of the nation's intelligence agencies.
Her tenure was not without friction. Gabbard clashed publicly with the White House over the US conflict with Iran, after she testified to Congress that the intelligence community did not believe Iran was actively building a nuclear weapon, a position Trump publicly rejected. According to Axios, she is the fourth Cabinet-level official to leave the Trump administration this term.
Before her role as DNI, Gabbard served four terms in the House of Representatives as a Democrat representing Hawaii, later leaving the party in 2022 and becoming a prominent Trump supporter. During her time at ODNI, she oversaw the declassification of more than half a million pages of government records, covering topics ranging from the JFK assassination to the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.
