TON Governance Approves Native Token Rebrand to Gram
The Open Network community has voted 81.22% in favor of renaming Toncoin ($TON) to Gram ($GRAM), with the ticker change set to take effect on June 15, 2026. No token migration or user action is required.

The Open Network has approved one of the most significant changes in its history, with the community voting to rename its native token from Toncoin ($TON) to Gram ($GRAM). The vote ran from June 1 to June 8, 2026, with 81.22% of participants supporting the proposal. Votes in favor amounted to 2.68 million TON, while votes against totaled 604,880 TON.
What Changes, and What Does Not
The proposal, submitted by Telegram, clarifies that the change affects only the token name and ticker. The blockchain itself will retain the TON name and continue to operate as The Open Network. No token swaps, bridging transactions, migrations, or conversion processes will be implemented. The ticker symbol transitions from $TON to $GRAM on June 15, 2026, at 12:00 UTC.
The rename also resolves a long-standing ambiguity: "TON" has been doing double duty as the blockchain name, the ecosystem name, and the token ticker. "Gram" separates the asset from the network, so users can say TON is the chain and GRAM is the coin.
The TON team has warned holders to stay alert to scams. The team emphasized that this is only a name and ticker change, with no swap, migration, or claim involved, and warned that any website asking users to "migrate TON to GRAM" is a scam.
A Return to Roots, and a Broader Roadmap
The name Gram is not new to the TON ecosystem. The native token was originally defined as Gram in TON's technical documentation, and the name continues to appear in the network's core codebase. The original Gram token was derailed by a U.S. SEC lawsuit that forced Telegram to abandon its $1.7 billion initial coin offering in 2020, after which community developers revived the project under the TON Foundation and renamed the token Toncoin.
The rebrand is step four of Pavel Durov's seven-step "Make TON Great Again" roadmap. Step three, Telegram becoming TON's largest validator, was completed in May, with three more undisclosed steps still to come. The roadmap also includes April's Catchain update, which improved blockchain speed and reduced transaction fees.
Analysts suggest the move could pave the way for broader adoption as Telegram integrates blockchain features like payments, mini-apps, and digital ownership tools into its messaging platform, which boasts over one billion users.
