WTI crude oil prices plummeted more than 7% after Iran announced it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial traffic, wiping out what traders had priced in as a geopolitical risk premium. The move extended total losses on the day to more than 12% as the so-called war premium rapidly evaporated from global energy markets.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical oil chokepoints, with roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids passing through it, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Any disruption to the waterway has historically sent energy prices sharply higher, and its reopening has had the opposite effect.

$BTC touched $76K for the second time in the same session, offering a contrast to the turmoil in commodity markets. The divergence has drawn attention to Bitcoin's behaviour during periods of macroeconomic stress, with some investors treating it as a hedge against geopolitical uncertainty rather than a risk asset correlated with traditional markets.

The restoration of commercial shipping access through the strait effectively brings an end to the maritime blockade that had driven energy prices toward elevated levels in recent weeks.
