French Counter-Terror Unit Frees Mother And Son After 20-Hour Crypto Kidnap Ordeal
France's elite GIGN counter-terror unit rescued a mother and her 10-year-old son early Tuesday after the pair spent roughly 20 hours in captivity at the hands of a criminal gang targeting a crypto entrepreneur.
The two were abducted from their home in Burgundy on April 13 and held in a hotel room in the Val-de-Marne department near Paris. The gang demanded "several hundreds of thousands" of euros from the father, described in reports as a cryptocurrency entrepreneur. He did not pay. GIGN officers recovered both hostages unharmed and arrested seven suspects at the scene.
The incident is at least the 19th reported violent crypto-linked attack in France in 2026 alone, a frequency that has drawn international attention and prompted French authorities to acknowledge a worsening pattern of targeted crime against those perceived to hold digital assets. The victims are typically founders, executives, or their relatives. Ransom demands routinely run into six or seven figures, and the operations are becoming increasingly organised.
France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has publicly called for tougher measures in response to the surge in crypto-related kidnappings, describing the trend as a serious threat to public security, according to Reuters.
