Anthropic Blocks Openclaw From Claude Subscriptions, Forces 135k+ Users To Pay-As-You-Go

@AnthropicAI has cut off Claude Pro and Max subscribers from using their flat-rate plans with third-party AI agent frameworks, starting with @openclaw. The change took effect April 4, forcing an estimated 135,000+ active OpenClaw instances onto pay-as-you-go API billing. Some heavy users face cost increases of up to 50x.

OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, who left the project to join OpenAI in February, called it "a betrayal of open-source developers." He said Anthropic "first copied popular features into their closed harness, then locked out open source." Anthropic's Boris Cherny said subscriptions "weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools."

Anthropic is offering a one-time credit equal to one month's subscription and up to 30% off prepaid usage bundles. The move reflects a growing tension across the AI industry between flat-rate subscription pricing and the heavy compute demands of autonomous AI agents running 24/7.
